« Last post by Tracy Little on February 07, 2018, 10:56:58 AM »
The Upper Dales Family History Group will hold a day of talks and presentations by members and guest speakers at the Dales Countryside Museum in Hawes on Saturday, March 24.
Find out how a descendant of refugees became Rector of Wensley and how a poor Coverdale curate lived in Georgian times, discover unexpected links between Teesdale and London, and hear a tale of highway robbery, bigamy, hidden identity, murder, mystery and mayhem in the Constantine family!  After lunch Thomas Chandler of Richmondshire Youth Theatre will be speaking on the research behind his recent play Miners of Lead, Rob and Harriet Fraser will talk about the making of the Voices from the Land exhibition of photographs and recordings of contemporary farming life in the dales, and Dave Carlisle will give an introduction to the display of lead mining material in the Museum.

The day is open to everyone and the cost of £15 includes a buffet lunch provided by the Firebox Café, tea and coffee during the day, free parking on site and free entry to the display areas of the Museum.

Over lunch there will be time to look around the Museum, find out what resources are available in the Research Room or compare notes about your own family history interests.

The day starts with coffee from 9.30 am and ends around 5pm, with an optional evening meal together.  Advance booking only; closes March 1.

Upper Dales Branch / February 2017 meeting

Meetings recommence on Wednesday, February 22, at 2pm in Harmby village hall with ‘A Sword in One Hand and a Complement in the Other’, a personal audience with Alice Thornton of Kirklington and Hipswell, 1627 – 1707, who will describe her life during the English Civil War and Commonwealth and the profound effects of the war on her family.

Alice was the daughter of Christopher Wandesford of Kirklington near Bedale.  Towards the end of her very long life she wrote her memoirs which covered the interesting period of English history when families were torn apart by the Civil War, the Commonwealth, and the Restoration of the Monarchy.  Her father held high office in Ireland but after his untimely death her widowed mother returned to England and great danger.  Her memoirs tell a unique story from a female point of view. Inter-twined with the political situation Alice tells us about being a daughter, a sister, a wife and a mother; living alternately at Hipswell Hall, her husband’s home at East Newton near Nunnington, and St Nicholas in Richmond.  The title is taken from Alice’s own description of her first meeting with her future husband – definitely not a case of love at first sight!
