A council spokesman said: “Members agreed with the newly-elected leader’s recommendation to overturn the earlier decision to move the service, meaning it will stay where it is. There will be a consultation on how the library will look in the future, with a further report due before cabinet early next year.”

This year the Durham at War team invites members of the public to join them at the third and final conference. With the 1914-18 centenary soon drawing to a close, the office is offering a lively programme of talks, displays and film previews over the past four years.
Speakers include one of the UK’s most exciting military historians, Andy Robertshaw, who was historical adviser to Steven Spielberg on the blockbuster film ‘War Horse’. Andy’s conference talk will focus on WW1 myth-busting. Authors, historians, archaeologists and volunteers will share their research into the identification of bodies recently recovered from a battlefield of 100 years ago, medical provision during the Battle of the Somme, women at war and new techniques for uncovering First World War archaeology.

For anyone new to family history research the North Yorkshire County Record Office is offering the ideal introduction – ‘Family History for Beginners’ – a day course led by an experienced family history tutor. It will show you how to get started, how to make use of the internet, and how to look for and use registration and census records.
Please note this course will be held at The Globe Community Library, North Road, Stokesley.
The course costs £12 with a £5 non-refundable deposit required. Booking is essential.

On 1 April 2018, the Royal Air Force (RAF) celebrated its 100th birthday. To mark this special occasion, former members of the RAF, WAAF, WRAF and Preston Park Museum volunteers, have come together to create a display to showcase and commemorate our region’s involvement in the RAF, past and present.
