Married at 23 (lasted 29yrs) and had 2 sons in England & a daughter in South Africa. Family returned to England by sea in 1970 but he drove his Austin 1800 travelling through India and Afghanistan. Worked in London then Poole in Dorset.

Living aboard his catamaran, he sailed the Mediterranean then the Atlantic and with his motorcycle rode through America. While travelling through Australia met Audrey who was from Victoria, BC. settling there eventually for his last 13 years.

SMITH Michael Laurence born Whitby

30/01/1937 – 17/12/2020 Obituary. Drafted into the Army Intelligence Corp at 18.  Soon transferred to Water Transport and shipped off to Hong Kong for 2 1/2 years running boats in the harbour. Returning to England, he went into Hotel Management training. He married Barbara in 1960, and quickly decided to move to Barbara’s birthplace, Vancouver where he was a salesman. Celebrated their 50th Anniversary in 2010.

Predeceased by wife, Edna MEIR (1980) and 2nd wife Jessie (2015). 1940, he aged12 and younger brother Gordon (8) were part of evacuation plan to Canada & was fostered in Amherst and Springhill Nova Scotia. 1943 – returned to Britain & began work to obtain a mechanical engineering certificate but married 1949, went to London to study for ministry then Canada 1951. In 1961, the family moved to Kimberley, B.C. Brother Malcolm and his family emigrated there in 1962.

After emigrating to Canada in 1951, David moved to Victoria, BC, in 1952, where he worked on various ships & the BC Ferry Corporation, retiring in 1989 after 20 years’ service as a ship’s captain
