Women and men associated with St Hilda’s Church, West Cliff, Whitby who died in the 1914 – 1918 Great War and whose deaths are recorded in a Book of Remembrance.
ANDERSON Stanley Lee. Joined R.F.A. in Sep 1914 – later joined R.A.M.C. Lost at sea on Union Castle liner “Galway Castle” torpedoed 12 Sep 1918 aged 26 years.
ATKINSON Reuben. Driver, North Riding Battery R.F.A. (Whitby Territorials). Injured in France 28 Aug. 1915 and died aged 24 years in No 2 Casualty Clearing Station.
BOOTH Albert. Son of Wm and Julia Booth. Born 12 June 1898. Seaman R.N. Killed in action 23 Jan 1917 on destroyer “Symoon”.
BUCHANNAN Alexander. Eldest son of the late Charles Buchannan. Was commissioned in the West Yorkshire Regt on 17 May 1915. Killed approaching the trenches 21 Jul 1917. 2nd Lieut.
BULMER Rosa Lisle V.A.D. Daughter of Mr and Mrs Sam Bulmer, Whitby. Served seven months at St. David’s Hospital, Malta and eleven months at the First General Military Hospital, Camberwell. Died of fever 23 Apr 1917.
COLLIER Vincent. Son of Vincent and Kate Collier. Joined the West Yorkshire Regt (Duke of Wellingtons) in May 1918. Arrived in France 15 Sep 1918. Went into action at 7.30 am on 29 Sep 1918 was wounded at 9.30 am and died the same day aged 20 years. Buried in Lowrie British Cemetery near Havrincourt. Private.
COOPER Thomas Pinkney. Third son of Joseph C and Alice Cooper. Born 18 Sep 1881. Enlisted in R.N.D. 3rd Field Ambulance. Left England for Dardanelles 27 June 1915. Died of dysentry on board H.M. hospital ship “Devantia” 5 Aug 1915. Buried at Malta. Private.
COSER Thomas William. Boatswain, Mercantile Marine. Eldest son of George and Maria Coser. Torpedoed off Gibraltar on board SS “Sowell” on 14 Apr 1917.
COSER Ernest. Private, Yorkshire Regt. Third son of George and Maria Coser. Enlisted Sep 1914. Went to France July 1915. Was killed in action on the Somme 10 Jul 1916.
DAY Arthur. Private, Yorkshire Regt. Youngest son of Mr R Day. Killed in action 26 Feb 1917 aged 33 years.
EDWARDS Charles. 2nd Lieut East Yorkshire Regt. Second son of William Edwards. Enlisted as a trooper in Hussars 21 Aug 1914 was commissioned on 9 Nov 1914 and was attached to East Yorkshire Regt “Pioneers”. Served at Suvla Bay, Egypt and was killed on the Western Front 29 Jan 1917 aged 24 years. Interred in Bapaume Military Cemetery.
GRAY Cyril Seaton. 2nd Lieut Wiltshire Regiment, son of William Seaton Gray. Enlisted in Shropshire Light Infantry on 14 Nov 1914. Was commissioned in the Wiltshire Regt. Went to the Front Mar 1915. Severely wounded on 16 Jun 1915. He returned to France where he was wounded in action on 9 Apr 1917 and died in hospital in France on 21 Apr 1917 aged 22 years.
HARRISON Edith May. V.A.D. daughter of Charles and Hannah M. Harrison. Born 29 Nov 1895. Died on 12 Nov 1918 of pneumonia in Military Annexe of York County Hospital.
HARRISON Frederick Arthur. Corporal R.G.A. Son of Charles and Hannah M Harrison. Born May 1894. Served in Royal Garrison Artillery. Died of pneumonia on 23 Oct 1918 at Filey.
HARROWING John Stanley. M.C. Captain Royal Warwickshire Regiment. Second son of Sir John Harrowing. Joined A.S.C. Left England in Aug 1914 joining an Indian contingent. Attained Captain. He resigned to join Royal Warwickshire Regt as Lieut Sep 1916. In Sep 1917 he was awarded Military Cross and promoted Captain. Killed in action on 4 May 1917 aged 27 years.
HEADLAM John. Lieut Scout Pilot R.A.F. son of Mr and Mrs W A Headlam. Received commission in Royal Flying Corps 27 Sep 1917 and became Lieut in R.A.F. Killed in France 30 May 1918 aged 19 years.
HEBDEN Alan. Lieut. Black Watch. After several attempts to join the army in 1914 he joined the R.A.M.C. as a stretcher bearer and served in France until 1916 when he was commissioned in the 8th Black Watch. He was killed in action at Salonica May 1917.
HEBDEN Harry Cutler. Lance Corporal Yorks & Lancs Regiment. Youngest son of James and Emma Hebden. Joined the 53rd Yorks & Lancs Regt. Died of pneumonia aged 19 years after serving six weeks in the Army of Occupation in Cologne. Buried in Sadfriedhop Cemetery, Cologne.
JEFFERSON Henry. Rifleman – Artists’ Rifles. Youngest son of John Foss and Hannah J Jefferson. Joined Artists’ Rifles Feb 1917. Killed at Paschendaele 29-31 Oct 1917 aged 32 years. Only six weeks training.
LANGDALE William. Private 17th Lancers. Youngest son of the late Isaac and Dinah Langdale. Enlisted 1905. Served in India. Returned to civilian life in Mar 1914. Recalled to Military Service at outbreak of war. At the Front by Oct 1914. Killed by sniper near Ypres 25 May 1915. Grave unknown.
MUMBY William Herbert. Trooper Household Cavalry. Born 1883.Enlisted Dec 1917. In action at Poelcaprelle. Posted missing 12 Oct 1918.
ROBINSON Frank. Private Yorkshire Regiment. Enlisted Dec 1914. Wounded in action 18 Apr 1916. Died in St Thomas Hospital, London 6 Dec 1916 aged 30 years.
SMALES Florence Emily V.A.D. Daughter of Charles Smailes. Volunteered for Foreign Service as V.A.D. 4 Aug 1914. Sailed for Egypt 11 Sep1915. Died of dysentry at Alexandria 13 Oct 1915.
SNOWDON Robert Stanley. Seaman Mercantile Marine. Lost at sea on board SS “Stanhope” 17 Jan1917
SPEEDY Ralph Coggin. 2nd Lieut Machine Gun Corps. Enlisted at outbreak of war. Served in Palestine. He was invalided home May 1918. Was torpedoed on the voyage and died 4 Dec 1918 aged 32 years.
VAUSE Wilfrid. M.C. Captain Yorkshire Regt. Enlisted in the Territorials spring 1914, wounded in autumn 1915. Returned to action Mar 1916 and in Sep. 1916 was awarded the Military Cross and gazetted to a Commission in the Yorkshire Regt. Killed in action 23 Apr 1917.
WATERS Harry. C.Q.M.S. 7th King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. Son of Mr and Mrs R Waters. Enlisted Aug 1914. Killed in action Bourlon Wood (Cambrai) 26 Nov 1917. Buried at Ypres (Somme).
WINTERBURN Frank Amos. Lance Corporal 1st Royal Scots. Son of Frank and Christina Winterburn. Born 18 Jul 1893. Killed in action at Ganzicourt, Belgium on 23 Jan 1918.
